UPDATED: Norwegian police raided the offices of the Catholic Church’s diocese in Oslo on Thursday, and charged the diocese, Bishop Bernt Eidsvig and the church’s finance director with serious fraud. The church leaders are suspected of wrongfully claiming as much as NOK 50 million (USD 13 million) in state support by presenting fraudulent membership statistics.

Priests’ vows of celibacy may have led to paedophilia, the Roman Catholic Church in Australia has said, in what is believed to be the first such admission by Catholic officials worldwide.

A group advising the Australian Church on how to deal with thousands of cases of child sex abuse said celibacy may be psychologically damaging for some priests.

“Obligatory celibacy may also have contributed to abuse in some circumstances,” said a 44-page report from the group, called the Truth, Justice and Healing Council.

It was not until Coppin and others went to the United Nations Committee Against Torture (UNCAT), which in turn put pressure on the Irish government to investigate, that Senator Martin McAleese, a former member of the Irish Senate and a devout Roman Catholic, was asked to head an inquiry into what exactly had happened behind the convent walls.

Survivors were astounded to read in his report that "ill treatment, physical punishment and abuse… was not something experienced in the Magdalene laundries".

The government has now called another inquiry into what happened at another church-run institution, the Mother and Baby homes for unmarried mothers, after it was revealed earlier this year that nearly 800 young children had been buried in unmarked graves from 1925-1961 at a convent in the west of Ireland. Some remains were found in a concrete tank.

So the Magdalene laundry survivors are asking for this latest inquiry to have a wide remit, and to investigate the laundries again.

"I would love them to get to the real truth, but they won't," says Coppin. "They won't inquire properly because I know what the government are like."

The treatment of those immigrant girls shows that many of the attitudes of the past still exist today. It was visible also with the pace of the Tuam story, indifference followed by over-compensation after foreign media had publicised it.

Another Polish cleric has claimed that broken homes are a catalyst for paedophilia.

Father Ireneusz Bochynski, from the city of Piotrkow Trybunalski in Central Poland, has said he knows of 10-year-old children who “went to bed with adults, wanting to be fulfilled, and it was the choice of the child.”

AFP - For nearly half a century, French Catholics have been reciting a version of the Lord's Prayer that could be considered blasphemous, the country's bishops have concluded after years of debate.

In a ruling long advocated by traditionalists and with implications for other-language versions of the prayer, the bishops have approved a new edition of the French-language bible which will include a revised wording of one of the prayer's best-known lines, "Lead us not into temptation."

The existing French version of that line reads, "Et ne nous soumets pas à la tentation", which translates as "Do not submit us to temptation."

This has long been controversial because of the possibility of interpreting it in a way that suggests God has the power to make people succumb to the temptation of sin -- contradicting most orthodox Christian theology which holds that He is infinitely and unchangeably good.

In the revised formulation, to be included in new bibles published on November 22, the line will read "Et ne nous laisse pas entrer en tentation" or "Let us not enter into temptation."

Infant circumcision is forced amputation of a healthy, functioning body part on a nonconsenting, innocent person. It clearly violates Catholic teaching and ethical health care directives. Don't be fooled by Trihealth's statement!

It remains a curious feature of our response to child abuse that while companies suspected of fraud, such as Enron, encounter dawn raids on their offices, confiscation of thousands of incriminating files and computers and the immediate arrest of senior individuals, the enforcement authorities do not proceed in similar vein with religious
orders where the sexual abuse of children and its cover-up is concerned.

So, given its track record with child abuse, given that it has covered up for paedophiles and conspired in allowing them to continue to abuse children, why does the church deem itself fit to share best practice in caring for the young?

Why would any self-respecting agency consult with it until the church has given up all its guilty men to the authorities and until its new internal procedures are independently verified?

Until then how could it pass the rigorous checks required for child protection?

At the urging of the Catholic church, abortion is banned under all circumstances—including rape, and where the mother faces death—in Chile, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and Suriname, as well as in El Salvador. In most other countries it is highly restricted. Only Cuba, Guyana, Puerto Rico and Uruguay offer abortion on demand (so does Mexico City, unlike the rest of Mexico).

To U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder: It is time that you do something about the Cardinals and Bishops who knowingly moved known pedophile priests from parish to parish, state to state and hid these rapists of children to avoid prosecution for the m. There is ample evidence that Cardinals Timothy Dolan, Roger Mahony, Bernard Law and others covered up these rapes of children by their priests. It is time to show these people simply because they are of a religious organization, they are not above the laws of the United States. They have committed numerous crimes against the Federal statues and it is you duty as U.S. Attorney General to do something about this.
