Infant circumcision is forced amputation of a healthy, functioning body part on a nonconsenting, innocent person. It clearly violates Catholic teaching and ethical health care directives. Don't be fooled by Trihealth's statement!

This is an email I just sent to the mohel who performed my circumcision 21 years ago today. My goal in sending this was to show him the perspective of someone who wished he hadn’t been circumcised, so that he would understand what his profession could do and maybe so he would question his continued participation in the field. I’ve chosen to publish this openly for two reasons: So that my friends and family can understand how I feel personally about my circumcision (rather than just my intellectual position on circumcision in the abstract), and so that anyone out there who is considering performing a circumcision or having one performed might change their minds.

Circumcision is a relatively new "tradition" for most American families, dating only from the late 1800s, when it was advanced as a Victorian measure to inhibit masturbation. Doctors' recommendations (ease in cleaning, preventing masturbation and other such shallow matters) and two world wars later, more than half of all American men had been circumcised.

Over 50% of penile nerve endings are removed during a circumcision, including one-hundred percent of the Meissner’s Corpuscles, the unique fine touch nerve receptors found only in fingertips and on the ridged band of the penis.

Mucous membrane exposed to the air for decades does callus.

Many physicians earn sizable compensation for performing circumcisions.

And it is true that your circumcision means that someone surgically altered your body in a permanent way without first having obtained your consent.

The Council of Europe has told its 47 member states (including the UK) that medically unnecessary circumcision is a violation of boys’ human rights.

In a groundbreaking move the council’s Parliamentary Assembly has declared that it is “particularly worried about a category of violation of the physical integrity of children” which includes “the circumcision of young boys for religious reasons”.

The Assembly has strongly recommended that its member states, which include the UK, take the following action:

1. Get clear on the extent of medically unnecessary circumcision in their country (around half a million boys in the UK are thought to be at risk but there is not official figure available)

2. Clearly define the medical, sanitary and other conditions that all male circumcisions should meet (this would include defining whether or not circumcision without anaesthetic or consent, by non-medical staff in non-medical settings should continue to be tolerated in the UK).

3. Promote greater awareness of how medically unnecessary male circumcision is performed and what the risks are.

4. To introduce legislation and policies to improve the protection of boys from the risks of medically unnecessary male circumcision.

5. To raise awareness of the alternatives to medically unnecessary male circumcision.

6. To actively initiate public debate, including intercultural and interreligious dialogue, aimed at reaching consensus on striking the balance between boys’ human rights and the rights and religious freedoms of parents and families.

7. To raise awareness about the need for boys to participate in decisions concerning their physical integrity and to consider introducing an age of consent preventing boys from being circumcised until they are old enough to choose.

"male circumcision is known to decrease the risk of contracting an infection and/or STD, and makes for easier hygiene"

This is false. The ONLY negative thing that comes with being intact is a less than 1% higher chance of UTI which women are twice as likely to get but we just treat them with antibiotics and a 1% higher chance of penile cancer (only because there is more skin to get infected with cancer) which is super rare anyway, a man has a higher chance of getting breast cancer but we let him keep his breast buds. “Penile cancer occurs in less than 1 man in 100,000 and accounts for less than 1% of cancers in men in the United States.” - Source “Approximately 20% of all UTIs occur in men. Between 1988 and 1994, the overall lifetime prevalence of UTI in men was estimated to be 13,689 cases per 100,000 adult men, based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In comparison, the estimate for women was 53,067 cases per 100,000 adult women during the same time period.” - Source There is an Australian study and one from Israel that actually suggests that circumcision may cause UTIs. The source of the idea that circumcisions prevent UTIs is Dr. Thomas Wiswell. Based on his own studies and findings, it would take 444 circumcisions to prevent 1 UTI, not worth it! - Source Every parent should teach their child how to properly bathe themselves, boy or girl. We teach girls to wash inside their labia and that cleaning is important boys are smart enough to understand that also once their foreskin is able to retract (NEVER forcefully retract the foreskin) they just rinse the skin with warm water. Soap can irritate the glans as well as the woman’s clitoris, so only use water! As for STDs or HIV circumcision status has no effect on catching the virus regardless of your penis type you need to WEAR PROTECTION. That is the only real way to prevent STDs and HIV infections. Condoms not cutting.

There are also different levels of FGM, a hoodectomy IS the same thing as MGM (What was usually performed in the US before it was made illegal in 1996). Removal of the prepuce - the clitoral hood and foreskin are the same part in men and women. Yes there are more severe cases of FGM performed in other parts of the world and they are just horrible, but in reality all forced genital cutting is horrible and no one can tell someone their pain is invalid because other people have it worse than they do. Saying boys AND girls deserve the right to their whole body is not comparing FGM to MGM, it’s saying ALL humans deserve human rights and they do.

There’s a common notion that circumcision is the best way to deal with phimosis or tight foreskin in children but the truth is that in over 80% cases the procedure can be avoided. We talked to Dr Arbinder Singal, a paediatric urologist about phimosis and how to deal with it. Excerpts from the interview:

At Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, more than 200 babies are being circumcised in a study to determine which circumcision clamp, the Gomco or the Mogen, is "better." How are they determining this? By looking at which clamp results in fewer blood-soaked bandages, and by looking at expressions of pain on babies' faces!

This "research" is a heinous violation of medical ethics and human rights. Babies are being cruelly subjected to an unconscionable medical experiment—all in service to the shareholders of a medical instrument company seeking to profit from bad science to sell more circumcision tools.

On October 3, 2013, we will be hosting a press conference and demonstration outside Good Samaritan Hospital, where Intact America will present the following letter. Our goal is to collect 10,000 signatures, and with your help, we can do it! Please add your signature and pass this on. These "researchers" need to know that conducting pain and bleeding experiments on babies is cruel, unscientific, and WRONG!

It remains a curious feature of our response to child abuse that while companies suspected of fraud, such as Enron, encounter dawn raids on their offices, confiscation of thousands of incriminating files and computers and the immediate arrest of senior individuals, the enforcement authorities do not proceed in similar vein with religious
orders where the sexual abuse of children and its cover-up is concerned.

So, given its track record with child abuse, given that it has covered up for paedophiles and conspired in allowing them to continue to abuse children, why does the church deem itself fit to share best practice in caring for the young?

Why would any self-respecting agency consult with it until the church has given up all its guilty men to the authorities and until its new internal procedures are independently verified?

Until then how could it pass the rigorous checks required for child protection?

Its formation was announced by Ms Gillard in November following pressure from lawmakers amid police claims that the Roman Catholic Church had concealed evidence of paedophile priests.

There are two separate but related matters here: First, the individual responsibility of the pope in one instance of this moral nightmare and, second, his more general and institutional responsibility for the wider lawbreaking and for the shame and disgrace that goes with it. The first story is easily told, and it is not denied by anybody. In 1979, an 11-year-old German boy identified as Wilfried F. was taken on a vacation trip to the mountains by a priest. After that, he was administered alcohol, locked in his bedroom, stripped naked, and forced to suck the penis of his confessor. (Why do we limit ourselves to calling this sort of thing "abuse"?) The offending cleric was transferred from Essen to Munich for "therapy" by a decision of then-Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger, and assurances were given that he would no longer have children in his care. But it took no time for Ratzinger's deputy, Vicar General Gerhard Gruber, to return him to "pastoral" work, where he soon enough resumed his career of sexual assault.

Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of the Los Angeles Archdiocese disciplined his predecessor, the now retired Cardinal Roger Mahony, after a California judge forced the archdiocese to release about 12,000 pages of church documents revealing how it handled allegations of abuse.

There were 192 priests and bishops named in litigation, the archdiocese said.

"The cases span decades," Gomez said in a statement Thursday. Some go back to the 1930s. The documents were released on the archdiocese's website.

"But that does not make them less serious. I find these files to be brutal and painful reading," he said.
