A growing number of airline passengers, particularly on trips between the United States and Israel, are now sharing stories of conflicts between ultra-Orthodox Jewish men trying to follow their faith and women just hoping to sit down. Several flights from New York to Israel over the last year have been delayed or disrupted over the issue, and with social media spreading outrage and debate, the disputes have spawned a protest initiative, an online petition and a spoof safety video from a Jewish magazine suggesting a full-body safety vest (“Yes, it’s kosher!”) to protect ultra-Orthodox men from women seated next to them on airplanes.

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will decide this Summer at its biennial General Assembly in Detroit (June 14-21, 2014) whether or not to stop investing in Caterpillar, Motorola Solutions, and Hewlett-Packard–3 companies that profit from the Israeli occupation. This proposal comes from the grassroots of the church as well as having been recommended by the church’s Mission Responsibility Through Investment Committee, the body of the church that implements the socially-responsible investment policies of the church.

We represent religious leaders, lay people and clergy from different faith-rooted traditions who support the Presbyterian Church in its quest to align its prophetic principles with actions that support the end of Israeli Occupation. We endorse the overtures that support boycott and divestment.

We share a belief in the central teachings of our respective religious traditions that mandate proactive nonviolent responses to systematic harming of fellow human beings. No human being is outside the circle of our concern. We fully support religious institutions that divest from corporations that profit from the construction of illegal Israeli settlements and barriers on Palestinian land in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. A religious community that proclaims justice and peace as its primary mission cannot accept funds from corporations that help maintain the vast system of repression used to occupy Palestinian land and harm Palestinian society.

Tanya Gold articulates well the existence of contemporary antisemitism (A ban on male circumcision would be antisemitic. How could it not be?, 12 October). But I think she's wrong in describing the Council of Europe as antisemitic for including ritual male circumcision in its examples of violations of children's rights.

I write as a male Jew circumcised at birth in 1958 as part of ritual. I would rather not have been. Yes, male circumcision isn't as extreme a practice as female genital mutilation. However, I know from personal experience that it results in such problems as desensitised sexual feeling, frequent soreness and occasional bleeding. I believe that this irreversible action is at heart an assault on a child, incapable of giving meaningful consent. I attach no blame to my parents' generation, who would have made the decision in the aftermath of the Holocaust, and who would have experienced a society more overtly hostile to them. But I find it depressing that contemporary Jews wish to continue the practice.

And she is quite wrong to say all Jews agree on circumcision.

Many Rabbis are welcoming intact males into the Jewish community, and a growing number of Rabbis feel that surgical circumcision is no longer appropriate in the 21st century. Over 50 Rabbis, mohels and other Jewish leaders perform covenant ceremonies without surgical circumcision, and many more will do so upon request. These include Rabbis in the Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist and many other branches of Judaism.

This is an email I just sent to the mohel who performed my circumcision 21 years ago today. My goal in sending this was to show him the perspective of someone who wished he hadn’t been circumcised, so that he would understand what his profession could do and maybe so he would question his continued participation in the field. I’ve chosen to publish this openly for two reasons: So that my friends and family can understand how I feel personally about my circumcision (rather than just my intellectual position on circumcision in the abstract), and so that anyone out there who is considering performing a circumcision or having one performed might change their minds.

Ethiopian Jews are challenged daily by white Israelis for not being “real” Jews. About a year ago a national television station in Israel broadcasted a story of an Ethiopian family that sparked protests across the country among Ethiopian Jews living in Israel. The story took place in the southern city of Kiryat Malachi where a family with an Ethiopian background struggled to buy an apartment and soon discovered that many tenants in the city have signed agreements not to sell or rent properties to Ethiopians (3).  The WikiLeaks cable adds that 50% of Ethiopian parents in Israel are not equipped to support their children stay in school. As a result, according to the cable, in 2009 roughly 26% of the children dropped out of school at early ages.

Israel’s Holocaust History Museum at Yad Vashem was built to preserve and protect the largest collection of Holocaust documentation in the world. It contains over 100 million pages of evidence documenting the Holocaust.

This weekend, one of those documents is being re-written. After years of clashing with the Vatican over an unfavorable description of Pope Pius xii’s actions during the Holocaust, Yad Vashem has finally agreed to re-word the controversial display.

four Hasidic men have been arrested for alleged harassment and obstruction of witnesses, including the offer of a $500,000 bribe to refuse to testify against a Hasidic leader. The prominent accused man in the Satmar Hasidic community, Nechemya Weberman, has been accused of 88 counts of sexual misconduct, including oral sex with a child younger than 13 years old. In addition to the money, the men are accused of threatening to withdraw the kosher certification from the restaurant of the boyfriend, Hershy Deutsch, unless the woman dropped her claims.

Several weeks back, Israel was rocked by a night of right-wing race-riots targeting African refugees in Tel Aviv. The thuggery was frightening – refugees were attacked, African-owned businesses and stores were vandalized and a community was forced to hunker down behind closed doors in fear for their lives.
