Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of the Los Angeles Archdiocese disciplined his predecessor, the now retired Cardinal Roger Mahony, after a California judge forced the archdiocese to release about 12,000 pages of church documents revealing how it handled allegations of abuse.
There were 192 priests and bishops named in litigation, the archdiocese said.
"The cases span decades," Gomez said in a statement Thursday. Some go back to the 1930s. The documents were released on the archdiocese's website.
"But that does not make them less serious. I find these files to be brutal and painful reading," he said.
Germany’s justice minister said on Thursday the country’s Roman Catholic Church appeared to be shrinking from independent scrutiny after bishops sacked a top criminologist they had hired to investigate clerical sexual abuse.
Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger said the German bishops had initially committed to an outside study after devastating abuse revelations in 2010 which saw 600 people file claims against priests, but said they now seemed to want to control which findings would be published.
Contrary to the Pope’s claim, there are millions of atheists who are not just good without god, but often times act more morally than the godly. The Pope’s track record of trafficking sex offenders around the globe so that they can hide from prosecution, enabling them to repeat their crimes is an excellent example of that. It doesn’t appear that his holiness is defending the human persons (often children) who are victims of these sex crimes.
In contrast, there are humanist associations, societies of ethical culture, and atheist groups all over the world who care and actively fight for human dignity not because of the threat of eternal torture or the lore of a blissful eternity, but because they have human empathy and compassion. They deny god and defend human dignity.
“ People have this picture in their minds of a person planning to — a psychopath," Groeschel said. "But that’s not the case. Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster — 14, 16, 18 — is the seducer. ”— Father Benedict Groeschel, American Friar, Claims Teens Seduce Priests In Some Sex Abuse Cases
