The Citizens United decision lets corporations buy elections outright. Now the Supreme Court is preparing the worst sequel ever made.*

Dear Supreme Court: We're tired of corporations and billionaires wielding so much power over our elections. Don't give them even more outsized influence this year. Give the power back to us, the people.

We need a new Church Committee that is fully empowered to investigate the abuses of the NSA and make public its findings, and that is charged with recommending new laws to ensure the U.S. government does not violate our constitutional rights.

CISPA is Back.

Dangerous Cybersecurity Legislation Threatens Online Privacy

The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) is back.

Last year, Representatives Rogers and Ruppersberger introduced CISPA, which would create a gaping new exemption to existing privacy law. CISPA would grant companies more power to obtain “threat” information (such as from private communications of users) and to disclose that data to the government without a warrant -- including sending data to the National Security Agency.

This week, CISPA was reintroduced in the House of Representatives. EFF is joining groups like ACLU and Fight for the Future in combating this legislation.

The United States is one of the few countries left in the world who still have not converted to using the Metric System as a standardized system of measurement. Instead of going along with what the rest of the world uses, we stubbornly still adhere to using the imprecise Imperial Unit - despite the fact that practically every other country that we interact with uses Metric.

Why should we convert to using the Metric System? Because it's superior, less convoluted - everything is ordered in units of tens, while the chaotic arrangement of the Imperial System slows things down for us - not only in terms of education, but also businesses, science, foreign relations, and daily life.

The Sasquatch is an indigenous species living in American forests, and should be lawfully protected from harm, including being hunted, trapped, or killed. Severe penalties should be legally enforced with fines and jail time for anyone harming, trapping, or hunting this unique rare species.
officially recognize the Sasquatch as an indigenous species and have them lawfully protected by laws banning any hunting | We the People: Your Voice in Our Government

The gun lobby’s extremist political agenda has held America’s political system hostage for too long. The NRA and the National Shooting Sports Foundation have opposed even the most non-controversial reforms such as funding the confiscation of illegal guns from criminals and the mentally ill, and eliminating poisonous lead from bullets.

Take a stand against NRA extremism and for common-sense reforms by endorsing the two petitions below.

The nation is still coming to grips with the horrors surrounding the Newtown, Connecticut massacre, but already Mike Huckabee has used the killings to promote his hateful agenda in a stomach-churning speech blaming gay people for raising families and scientists for promoting evolution.

Going on Fox News on Friday and then again on his television show on Sunday, the former governor repeatedly blamed the forces of “secularism” for the massacre, from kids with iPhones to pharmacies that stock “abortion pills”. Tell Fox News that Mike Huckabee does not deserve a platform for his misguided, insensitive words.

Fox News: Take Mike Huckabee off the air for his grotesque, hateful commentary.

Together we can send a message to Zara that they should be one of the brands rejecting child slavery in their clothes. Will you call on Zara to join the boycott to get child slavery out of our clothes? When we get to 100,000 signatures, we’ll deliver the petition to the CEO, Pablo Isla, at their headquarters in A Coruña, Spain.

The roar of a chainsaw shatters the peaceful calm of the Karelia forest in Northwestern Russia. A logger carves into an exquisite giant — a 600-year-old tree — with expert precision. Within minutes, he has masterfully sliced through tree rings, added the felled tree to a growing pile, and moved on to the next.

These trees — part of Russia’s last remaining old-growth forests — will be chopped up to make cutting boards, wooden spoons and other items for IKEA. IKEA has built a reputation around sustainability and tells its customers, literally, “We Love Wood”, and that the furniture they buy will not contain wood from old-growth forests. But a new report shows that IKEA is clear-cutting Russia’s remaining ancient forests and destroying hundreds of thousands of unique animal species for profit. If it doesn’t stop now, there may be no trees left.

The European Commission, European Parliament and Member States:

As citizens concerned about the wave of banking crises that are affecting our economies and our livelihoods, we call on you to take action to ensure that bankers are held responsible. This can only be done by introducing strong legislation against market abuse, including criminal sanctions for bankers who ride roughshod over regulations or break our laws.

Please join the Rationalist Association (UK) in condemning the misuse of Indian law by several Catholic organisations to silence a campaigner against superstition. In March 2012, following his exposure of a supposed miracle at a Catholic Church in Mumbai as nothing more than the result of a leak, a complaint was lodged against Sanal Edamaruku by local Catholic organisations with the Mumbai police, who are now able to arrest him. He has been denied 'anticipatory' bail which means if arrested he faces a long term in prison merely for explaining the science behind an apparent mystery.
