If you understand the United States as a patchwork of separate nations, each with its own origins and prevailing values, you would hardly expect attitudes toward violence to be uniformly distributed. You would instead be prepared to discover that some parts of the country experience more violence, have a greater tolerance for violent solutions to conflict, and are more protective of the instruments of violence than other parts of the country. That is exactly what the data on violence reveal about the modern United States.

Although defenders of religion like to portray faith as a source of peace and fellowship, and condemn those who commit atrocities in its name as untrue believers, the daily news media show how far this is from being invariably true. In fact, the relentless drip of bad news about religion-prompted violence in the world shows that the more zealous people are in their religious beliefs, the more likely they are to behave in non-rational, antisocial or violent ways.

I recently found the full text of Michael Pearl’s To Train Up a Child online, in case anyone is interested. I also found some compilations of quotes and basic teachings from both that book and another of the Pearls books, and the transcript for an interview between Anderson Cooper and Michael Pearl. I want to pull all of these things together for those who may be interested.

First, a selection of quotes and recommendations from To Train Up a Child.

The Pearls recommend whipping infants only a few months old on their bare skin. They describe whipping their own 4 month old daughter (p.9). They recommend whipping the bare skin of “every child” (p.2) for “Christians and non-Christians” (p.5) and for “every transgression” (p.1). Parents who don’t whip their babies into complete submission are portrayed as indifferent, lazy, careless and neglectful (p.19) and are “creating a Nazi” (p.45).

Expect to see a lot fewer images of toxic sludge creeping through small communities, thanks to the hard work of ExxonMobil. The company could have used its prodigious resources to make its oil pipelines more secure, preventing town-destroying leaks like the one that hit Mayflower, Arkansas. But they figured out that it would be cheaper to just corrupt the local law to chase reporters out and get the FAA to establish a Temporary Flight Restriction zone over the spill. Problem solved!

Fifteen years before the clergy sex abuse scandal came to light, Archbishop Roger M. Mahony and a top advisor plotted to conceal child molestation by priests from law enforcement, including keeping them out of California to avoid prosecution, according to internal Catholic church records released Monday.

There are 6 violent deaths per 100,000 residents, according to a new report. That far exceeds any other wealthy nation. Gun violence contributes to Americans' lower life expectancy, the report explained. The U.S. also has more drug-related deaths, infant mortality and AIDS. The nation's health care system, harmful behaviors and social and economic conditions could be factors.

Target: United States Congress

Goal: Cap   spending in order to promote fairness

Capping expenditures for political campaigning has been a hotly contested issue for some time. While proposals for caps have been struck down in the past, a 2012 study by the Huffington Post suggests that 80 percent of voters are in support of limiting the amount of money given to groups that influence the outcome of the election. Before anything can be done, however, changes must be made to the constitution that, as of 2010, removed limits on independent campaign spending due its subsequent infringement of “political speech.”
