Justice NOW! It's Time To Stop The Humanitarian Crisis at Parchman Prison

Photo Description: Five men sleeping on the floor of a cell in Parchman Prison in Mississippi.

Parchman is Mississippi’s oldest prison. It is plagued with a history of convict leasing, abusive guards, and inhumane conditions. Over the last 40 years, several whistleblowers, including incarcerated people, have sounded the alarm about the harmful conditions -- visible mold taking over the buildings, undrinkable water, and scraps served as meals. And conditions continue to get even worse. Five people in five days were murdered in their cells.

Parchman is a maximum-security prison that has been under lockdown for over a week. Dozens of pictures and videos have been shared from inside the prison bringing to light the horrific conditions: people being stabbed to death, dead and bloodied bodies filling cells, pipes leaking water and flooding cells, molded walls caving in on themselves, and up to six people sleeping side by side in a cell with nothing more than a sheet to cover their bodies. None of this happened by accident or overnight, this is the reality of our mass incarceration crisis in America. And in spite of all the cries for help, the Mississippi Department of Corrections and Governor Tate Reeves have failed to address the documented inhumane conditions inside the prison and continue to overlook the numerous claims that prison guards gave the assailants access to people’s locked cells.

This situation is an embarrassment to the State of Mississipi, and it is further proof that the state is incapable of managing its massive prison system. It’s been over 40 years since allegations of abuse, violence and civil rights violations in the prison made national headlines, and little has changed for the men incarcerated there. Parchman prison is a humanitarian crisis.

No one deserves to live in squalor, or in fear that their lives may be taken in the middle of the night. It is past time for Mississippi’s elected officials to respond to the suffering of hundreds of people inside Parchman Prison. That’s why we’re  demanding Mississippi’s Governor and elected officials take the following steps immediately:

  1. Moving all of the incarcerated men to a more humane facility and ensuring that all men have access to food, clean water, suitable sleeping conditions, and adequate health care;
  2. Conducting a full and independent investigation into the murders of five incarcerated men, including any officers or prison personnel who may have been involved; and
  3. Beginning a formal process to reduce incarceration in Mississippi and shut down Parchman Prison for good.

The Strange Case of the Insistent Suspect

To stifle criticism of the occupation, the Israeli right uses the classic diversion of “stand by our troops.” But what happens when the criticism comes from the troops?

Israel’s new deputy foreign minister on Thursday delivered a defiant message to the international community, saying that Israel owes no apologies for its policies in the Holy Land and citing religious texts to back her belief that it belongs to the Jewish people.

Senior UN officials in Jerusalem have been accused of caving in to Israeli pressure to abandon moves to include the state’s armed forces on a UN list of serious violators of children’s rights.

UN officials backed away from recommending that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) be included on the list following telephone calls from senior Israeli officials. The Israelis allegedly warned of serious consequences if a meeting of UN agencies and NGOs based in Jerusalem to ratify the recommendation went ahead. Within hours, the meeting was cancelled.

“Top officials have buckled under political pressure,” said a UN source. “As a result, a clear message has been given that Israel will not be listed.”

There are no women’s rights in Islam; there are no women rights in most Muslim countries. And as there is no freedom of expression in these countries, people have become virtually voiceless.

Child bride in Pakistan.

Yet many people, especially the so-called progressives, seem to find limitless excuses for fundamentalist Islamic atrocities against women. These include beheadings, stonings, domestic violence, honor killings, female genital mutilation, official legal inequality, home confinement, child marriages, and Saudi Arabia’s prohibition against women driving, to name a few.

Statements that come up with “multicultural” excuses to provide cover for the practices of fundamentalist Islam, however, never have, and never will, help to liberate women who suffer under Islamic misogyny, gender apartheid and jihad.

To make a positive change in Muslim countries, we need to be able to speak openly and tell the (too-often criminalized) truth about what Islamic teachings and traditions actually contain. Yet in Muslim countries, it is impossible speak openly about what is in these Islamic teachings and traditions, without putting one’s life at risk.

There is a situation even more frightening. It now seems to be difficult to speak openly about fundamentalist Islam even in Western countries, in part thanks to the dangerous enchantment of Western progressives and feminists who romanticize Islamism.

Women in the Muslim world desperately need the voice of Western progressives and feminists. But when it comes to finding excuses to neutralize critical questions about Islamic violence, Western progressives seem endlessly creative. Known by an increasing number of women as “Excuses for Abuses,” these include:

Criticizing Islam is racist and reveals “intolerance,” “bigotry” and “Islamophobia.”

For the record, Islam is not a race. Moreover, if you discuss the violent and misogynous teachings of Islam, it does not mean that you hate or are intolerant of Muslims, just of violence and misogyny.

Yet another method of preventing human rights activists from collecting accurate information on forced cotton laborers was witnessed in the fields this past weekend: Secret service employees ran ahead of activists and “advised” cotton pickers to keep silent.

Elena Urlaeva, the head of the Human Rights Alliance of Uzbekistan, experienced this new method first-hand during her monitoring activities of cotton fields near the town of Krasnogorsk in Tashkent province’s Parkentsky district on September 28.
