ALEC: Corporate Interests Going Right | The Naked Emperor

If you make the minimum wage, you should get the minimum vote.  But if you have bonuses, and capital gains income and investment income then you should clearly have more votes—in line with how much money you have.  That’s why we fund organizations like ALEC – the American Legislative Exchange Counsel.  We are the good people who bring you shoot first laws and most importantly various efforts to reduce the number of citizens who can vote.

Seed slavery is ethically important to address because it transforms the Earth family into corporate property. It is ecologically important because with seeds in the hands of five corporations, biodiversity disappears, and is replaced by monocultures of GMOs (genetically modified organisms). It is socially important because without seed sovereignty, there is no food sovereignty. After all, seeds are the first link in the food chain.

Prime Minister John Key says he apologises to Kim Dotcom for what he has described as "basic errors" by the Government Communications and Security Bureau, but that has not stopped opposition parties from calling for a more detailed independent inquiry.

In a media conference after the release of the report into unlawful monitoring of Mr Dotcom and an acquaintance, Mr Key said he was "appalled" at the agency, saying it had "failed at the most basic of hurdles."

"Of course I apologise to Mr Dotcom, and I apologise to New Zealanders."

He said New Zealanders were entitled to be protected by the law "and we failed to provide that protection to them."

On May 7th and June 8th, 2010, Microsoft and IBM met privately with members of New Zealand's Ministry of Economic Development (MED). They convinced the Ministry to abandon plans to exclude software from patentability, as can be seen in the new version of the text which was finally published on 28 Aug 2012.[1]

That Monsanto has a phenomenal level of influence over American legislators and regulators is well known, but the latest gift to the biotech industry is really over the top. A stunning rider, ironically named “the Farmers Assurance provision” (Section 733), has been added to the 2013 Agricultural Appropriations bill, aka the Farm Bill. This provision, if passed into law, will essentially grant biotech companies like Monsanto free reign to act with impunity.

Between 2006-2012 (so far) the Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate (F.I.R.E.) sector has invested a total of $4.2 billion in political power and influence including:

    • $829 million in congressional campaign contributions
    • $181 million in presidential campaign contributions
    • $2.8 billion in lobbying with over 18,400 lobbyists
  • Wall Street has spent $1,331 dollars per minute, every minute since 2006, to gain political influence.
  • F.I.R.E. sector campaign contributions and heavy lobbying of both parties are used to foster industry-loyal voting practices in Congress.
  • An average of 74% Senate Finance Committee votes matched the F.I.R.E. industry lobby position for seven bills examined; the total Senate’s average ‘industry loyalty rate’ matched the F.I.R.E. lobby position 66% of the time for the same bills.
  • To ‘put out the F.I.R.E.’ voters must expose and challenge the toxic campaign money from Wall Street that is putting corporate profits over the needs of a healthy democracy.

We have been reporting on an invalid sociological study on gay parenting carried out by researcher Mark Regnerus of the University of Texas, Austin.

Regnerus’s known total of $785,000 for the study was arranged by The Witherspoon Institute and The Bradley Foundation, where Robert P. George – (head of the anti-gay-rights, scientifically disreputable, so-called National Organization for Marriage) – holds positions of authority. Witherspoon president Luis Tellez is a NOM board member. NOM’s Robert George is a long-time Catholic Church co-conspirator in the Church’s ages-long, Unholy War Against Gays. He is a current Board member of The Catholic League, whose motormouth president Bill Donohue has a long and shameful history of verbal gay bashing.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering historic standards on industrial carbon pollution from new power plants. These standards would limit (for the first time) the amount of carbon pollution new and existing power plants can emit. The oil and coal industries are spending insane amounts of money to try and block these new rules, but we're not going to let them drown out our voices.

Over two million Americans are taking part in the largest EPA petition effort in history. Are you one of them? This has become a showdown between our voices and their money, and it's time to turn up the pressure.

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed a new Archbishop of San Francisco: Salvatore Cordileone. Though his name is not yet widespread, Cordileone, currently the Bishop of Oakland, has already had massive success pushing an anti-equality agenda: he was the heart of the Catholic Church’s strategy to pass Proposition 8 in California, which eliminated marriage equality for millions of Americans.

Israel’s Holocaust History Museum at Yad Vashem was built to preserve and protect the largest collection of Holocaust documentation in the world. It contains over 100 million pages of evidence documenting the Holocaust.

This weekend, one of those documents is being re-written. After years of clashing with the Vatican over an unfavorable description of Pope Pius xii’s actions during the Holocaust, Yad Vashem has finally agreed to re-word the controversial display.
